AN INSIGHT INTO THE DEPARTMENT
Rasasastra and Bhaishajyakalapana deals with the pharmacological aspects of Ayurveda. Unlike the other medical streams an uniqueness of Ayurveda is that the doctor can prepare his own medicine and dispense them. The making of the herbal formulations is taught by this department. The main class of therapeutic formulations mentioned in Ayurveda is termed as Panchavidha kashayakalapana which includes swarasa kalka kwatha shita kashaya and phanta which have different qualities and different actions. Other class include the churnas( powders ) arishta asava ( the fermented preparations ) sneha ( the ghee and oil mainly ) lehya ( linctus) bhasma( mineral medicine )vati ( tablets ) arks (distilled preparations ) etc.. In the UG course itself the students are taught the method of preparation and their significance. The mineral preparations like bhasma satwa are taught in the traditional methods. The medicines prepared are dispensed through the hospital out patient section. Along with the classic pharmacology the basic modern aspects are also taught as per the syllabus.
